What Is Entertainment

Entertainment Defined

As defined by the Collins Australian Pocket English Dictionary (1985)[1], Entertainment is:

n. something that entertains; interesting or amusing thing; esp., a show or performance

Dictionary.com, citing the Random House Unabridged Dictionary (1996)[2] defines Entertainment as:

1. the act of entertaining; agreeable occupation for the mind; diversion; amusement: Solving the daily crossword puzzle is an entertainment for many.
2. something affording pleasure, diversion of amusement, esp. A performance of some kind: The highlight of the ball was an elaborate entertainment.
3. hospitable provision for the needs and wants of guests.
4. a divertingly adventurous, comic , or picaresque novel.
5. Obsolete. maintenance in service.

From the above definitions we are informed that Entertainment is any activity that entertains an individual, providing them with a sense of pleasure and enjoyment. Entertainment could come from activities such as reading a novel, listening to the music on a CD, watching a movie on a DVD, baking a cake, restoring a classic car or playing a game of soccer. If I were to ask a handful of people what they considered entertainment to be, I wouldn’t receive the same response from each person I spoke to. As we are all individuals, we all have our own likes and dislikes; while one person may enjoy reading novels, another person may dislike reading books but instead find great enjoyment from outdoor activities.
